ChromaGen Testing

We are a specialist ChromaGen screening centre, helping those suffering from Colour Blindness, Colour Discrimination, Irlen Syndrome or learning difficulty conditions such as Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Autism, to experience visual comfort.

“To see a thing clearly in the mind makes it begin to take form.”

— Henry Ford

ChromoGen lenses are a series of coloured filters created to help with colour vision deficiency.  They work by changing the wavelength of each colour going into one or both eyes, which enhances colour perception and colour discrimination.  They can be worn discretely as soft contact lenses or made up as glasses.

The ChromoGen therapy adapts one of these filters, thereby providing immediate visual comfort.  They can enhance colour perception and colour discrimination for people who are colour blind or suffer from visual stress (also known as perceptual distortion) experienced in conditions such as Irlen Syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ADHD and Autism, and can therefore improve reading ability.

The most common symptoms of visual stress include words moving or sinking, shimmering or forming patterns that interfere with reading.

Irlen Syndrome - be informed:

  • Irlen Syndrome is a specific type of perceptual problem that affects the way the brain processes visual information. It is not an optical problem and can affect people of all ages, but can be easily detected and remedied.

For those with Irlen Syndrome, the brain is unable to process full spectral light. This results in:

    • a range of distortions in the environment

    • a range of distortions on the printed page

    • physical and behavioural symptoms

It is exacerbated by environmental factors such as lighting, brightness, glare, high contrast, patterns and colours.

  • Around 15-20% of the general population suffers from Irlen Syndrome. Many are not aware that they have a problem because they assume that everyone experiences the same distortions and physical discomfort.

Children are at most risk however, as their educational progress can suffer, but equally adults can experience difficulties in their normal daily lives and at work.

If undetected people with Irlen Syndrome can underachieve, without any awareness that their lives can be enhanced through a diagnostic analysis and the use of Irlen filters.

  • The main symptoms of Irlen Syndrome are listed below.

    • AD(H)D

    • Attention and concentration

    • Auditory processing issues

    • Behaviour

    • Brightness and glare

    • Depth perception and spatial awareness

    • Distortions of words

    • Distortions in the environment

    • Driving and parking accuracy

    • Driving at night difficulties

    • Dyslexic type problems

    • Effects on reading

    • Effects on writing

    • Effects on reading music

    • Effects on Maths

    • Headaches & migraines

    • Physical symptoms and discomfort

    • Poor motivation

    • Reading problems

    • Sensitivity to certain colours and patterns

    • Sensitivity to light

    • Sensitivity to tastes and textures in the mouth

    • Stress and work performance

    • Underachievement

  • The Irlen Method is a non-invasive patented treatment that uses precision tinted filters (ChromaGen lenses) worn as glasses or contact lenses.

These selectively reduce the input of specific wavelengths of light and allow the brain to process visual information correctly, without distortions and physical/behavioural symptoms.
